According to Jainism, the soul (jīva) does not come into existence at a particular time; rather, it is eternal and has always existed. Jain philosophy teaches that both soul (jīva) and matter (ajīva) are beginningless and endless. Souls are innumerable, individual, and distinct entities that have always existed and will always continue to exist.

The soul is inherently pure, possessing infinite knowledge, perception, bliss, and energy. However, due to the association with karmic particles, the soul undergoes the cycle of birth and death (saṃsāra) and experiences bondage and suffering. Liberation (moksha) is achieved when the soul is freed from all karmas.
