    4 months ago 58

Paushadh (Pauṣadha) is an important Jain spiritual vow and practice of temporary renunciation for purification of the soul.

    Meaning

The word Paushadh means to withdraw from worldly activities and live like a monk or nun for a fixed period, with discipline, silence, self-restraint, prayer, repentance, and meditation.

It is mainly a householder’s spiritual observance meant to reduce attachment, passions, and negligence.

    Purpose of Paushadh

    The main purpose is:
    • to purify the soul
    • to practice ahimsa, truth, non-possessiveness, and self-control
    • to reduce karma
    • to increase spiritual awareness
    • to prepare the mind for samyak darshan, samyak jnana, and samyak charitra

    When Paushadh is Observed

A Jain layperson may observe Paushadh:
    • on Paryushan
    • on Aṣṭāhnik
    • on holy days
    • on special personal spiritual days
    • whenever one wants to do deeper self-discipline and repentance

    How Paushadh is Observed

    During Paushadh, a person:
    • reduces or stops worldly activities
    • stays in a clean, quiet place, often a paushadh shala or home space
    • avoids entertainment, business, travel, and unnecessary speech
    • follows brahmacharya
    • practices kshama, samayik, swadhyay, pratikraman, and dhyan
    • eats less or may take simple food only as permitted by one’s tradition and capacity
    • keeps the mind focused on the soul

    Main Rules

A person in Paushadh should try to observe:
    • Ahimsa — not causing harm to living beings
    • Satya — truthful speech
    • Achaurya — not taking anything not given
    • Brahmacharya — celibacy and purity
    • Aparigraha — reduced possession and attachment

    Also, one should avoid:

    • anger
    • pride
    • deceit
    • greed
    • sensual enjoyment
    • idle gossip
    • unnecessary movement

    Internal Spirit of Paushadh

Paushadh is not only external discipline. Its real value is in:
    • inner detachment
    • repentance for past mistakes
    • forgiveness toward all beings
    • concentration on the pure soul
    • remembering the teachings of the Tirthankars

    Difference from Samayik

    • Samayik is usually a shorter practice of equanimity and meditation.
    • Paushadh is a deeper and longer vow of renunciation and discipline.
    • In Paushadh, a person lives in a more restrained and monk-like manner.

    Types of Paushadh

Traditionally, Paushadh may be observed with different levels of strictness, depending on one’s ability and tradition:
    • Desha Paushadh — partial or limited observance
    • Sarva Paushadh — more complete observance

    Benefit of Paushadh

    Paushadh helps:
    • calm the mind
    • develop self-control
    • reduce worldly attachment
    • increase merit and spiritual progress
    • prepare for liberation by weakening karmic bondage

    Simple Understanding

In simple words, Paushadh means taking a spiritual pause from worldly life and living for some time in a disciplined, prayerful, and soul-centered way.
