According to Jainism, time is cyclical and divided into two halves: Utsarpini (ascending half-cycle) and Avasarpini (descending half-cycle). Each half-cycle is further divided into six periods, known as "aras."

Currently, according to Jain cosmology, we are in the fifth Ara (Dushama) of the Avasarpini (descending) half-cycle. This era is considered to be a period of sorrow and spiritual decline, where true dharma and happiness steadily decrease. It is believed that after the sixth Ara, the cycle will begin to ascend again.
