Can I drink water in a closed bottle after sunset
In Jain Dharma, drinking water after sunset is generally avoided, because water may contain or attract subtle living beings and because care in the night is emphasized under ahimsa.
If the water is already in a closed bottle, the bottle being closed does not change the basic Jain caution about consuming after sunset. So, traditionally, it is better not to drink it after sunset.
A simple way to understand it:
- Before sunset: drinking water is acceptable, with proper care.
- After sunset: avoiding water intake is the more strictly observant Jain practice.
- Closed bottle: does not make post-sunset drinking fully appropriate in the strict Jain sense.
In practice, some people follow this very strictly, while others may follow it with some flexibility depending on vows, health, age, and tradition. But the ideal Jain discipline is to drink water before sunset and avoid it afterward.
