How does jainus dont eat potato
Jains generally avoid eating potato because it involves himsa to the plant and also because of the strong emphasis on non-violence in Jain Dharma.
Main reasons:
- Potato is a root vegetable. In harvesting it, the whole plant is uprooted, which is considered to destroy many forms of life.
- Root vegetables are believed to contain many lives and are more likely to cause harm than fruits or above-ground vegetables.
- Eating root vegetables also encourages greater violence in farming, since the plant must be pulled out from the earth.
So, in Jain practice, foods like potato, onion, garlic, carrot, beetroot, radish, and similar roots are usually avoided, especially by strict Jains.
This follows the Jain principle of: Ahimsa paramo dharmah — non-violence is the highest duty.
