Hey I'm looking to start practicing Jain Dharma. What are some good practices for beginners to pick up? I love this religion and want to make it my way of life.

That is a very beautiful intention. For a beginner, the best way to start Jain Dharma is to build a life around Ahimsa, self-discipline, and inner purity.

Here are some good practices to begin with:

    1. Practice Ahimsa in daily life

Be gentle in thoughts, words, and actions. Avoid harming living beings as much as possible.

    1. Eat with awareness and compassion

Try to adopt a pure vegetarian diet. If possible, gradually move toward stricter Jain dietary practices, such as avoiding root vegetables and food that involves violence in preparation.

    1. Speak truthfully and kindly

Follow Satya with care: speak what is true, but also what is beneficial and non-harmful.

    1. Reduce attachment and greed

Practice Aparigraha by living simply and avoiding unnecessary possessions, cravings, and waste.

    1. Create a daily spiritual routine

Spend time each day in: - prayer - meditation - introspection - reciting Jain stotras or sutras - remembering the qualities of the Tirthankars

    1. Study basic Jain teachings

Learn the core ideas of: - the three jewels: Right Faith, Right Knowledge, Right Conduct - karma - soul - vows and restraint

    1. Observe self-control

Start with small vows: - less anger - less lying - less waste - less indulgence - more discipline in habits

    1. Do seva and compassion

Help living beings where possible. Jain Dharma is not only meditation and study, but also a compassionate way of life.

    1. Visit a Jain temple or center

If possible, regularly go to a Jain temple, bow with humility, and learn from experienced Jain devotees or gurus.

    1. Progress gradually

Jain Dharma is deep and disciplined. Do not rush. Even small sincere steps, taken daily, are valuable.

A simple beginner’s path could be:

    • wake up with a prayer
    • remember Ahimsa throughout the day
    • eat mindfully
    • speak gently
    • reduce unnecessary desires
    • do evening introspection
    • read or listen to one Jain teaching each day

Most important: begin with sincerity, humility, and consistency. In Jain Dharma, steady inner purification is more important than sudden perfection.

If you wish, I can also give you a simple beginner Jain daily routine.
