we kill sevreral organisms even while breathing, should we stop breathing then?
No, we should not stop breathing.
In Jain Dharma, complete non-violence is the ideal, but life cannot be sustained without some unavoidable harm in ordinary bodily actions like breathing, walking, eating, or speaking. Jain ethics therefore teaches:
- Avoid intentional हिंसा as much as possible.
- Minimize harm in daily life.
- Reduce attachment, carelessness, and violence of thought, speech, and action.
- Practice samyak awareness and restraint, not self-destruction.
Breathing itself causes very subtle injury to living beings, but this is unavoidable for a worldly soul living in a body. Jainism does not ask us to stop breathing or stop living. Instead, it asks us to live with maximum vigilance, compassion, and restraint.
The deeper principle is:
- Unavoidable harm that comes from living is one thing.
- Intentional or careless harm is another.
So the goal is not to stop life, but to purify life through Ahimsa, self-control, and mindfulness.
