If my mom means the world to me but its not like I own her (my ness) so is it affection or attachment
In Jain Dharma, loving your mother deeply is natural, but if the feeling is mixed with “she is mine” or possessiveness, then it becomes attachment (rāga / moha).
Simple distinction:
- Affection with purity:
- Attachment:
In your words:
If your mother means the world to you, that can be good human affection. But if you are also thinking “not my ness”, that shows awareness of non-possessiveness, which is very close to Jain detachment. So the pure Jain view is:
- Care and respect = good
- Possession and clinging = attachment
Best Jain way:
Love her through:- seva,
- gratitude,
- respect,
- compassion,
but keep the inner understanding: “She is an independent soul, and I am also an independent soul.”
That is the balance of bhakti with vairagya.
