5 gyaans and their meanings
In Jainism, the 5 Jñāna (Gyaans) are the five kinds of knowledge:
- Mati Jñāna – Knowledge gained through the senses and mind, such as seeing, hearing, remembering, and thinking.
- Śruta Jñāna – Knowledge gained through scriptures, teachings, and words of the enlightened.
- Avadhi Jñāna – Clairvoyant knowledge; the ability to directly know subtle matter and distant things within limits.
- Manaḥparyāya Jñāna – Knowledge of the thoughts and mental states of others.
- Kevala Jñāna – Absolute, perfect, and limitless knowledge; complete omniscience attained by the soul.
These are considered the stages of knowledge in Jain philosophy, from ordinary understanding to पूर्ण और शुद्ध ज्ञान.
