How do I get rid of paap thoughts
To reduce and eventually remove paap thoughts, Jain Dharma advises jagruti, vairagya, and self-discipline. Thoughts become weaker when the mind is purified through right effort.
Try these Jain practices:
- Practice self-awareness
- Notice paap thoughts as soon as they arise. - Do not enjoy them or continue them in the mind.
- Replace them with dharmic thoughts
- Think of Ahimsa, Satya, Asteya, Brahmacharya, Aparigraha. - Remember the soul’s purity and your true goal: liberation.
- Pratikraman
- Do regular pratikraman with repentance for harmful thoughts, words, and actions. - This weakens karmic bondage.
- Swadhyay
- Read or listen to Jain scriptures, stutis, and teachings of the Tirthankars. - Good study naturally cleanses the mind.
- Satsang and good company
- Stay near people and environments that support Jain values. - Avoid content and company that increase passions.
- Mind control through restraint
- Reduce anger, pride, deceit, greed, attachment, and aversion. - These are the roots of paap thoughts.
- Meditation and contemplation
- Sit quietly and contemplate the soul, karma, impermanence, and forgiveness. - This brings inner calm.
- Repent immediately
- If a paap thought comes, do not feel hopeless. - Acknowledge it, repent, and bring the mind back to the pure state.
A simple inner prayer can be: “I do not want harmful thoughts. May my mind remain in ahimsa, purity, and आत्म-चेतना.”
In Jain view, the mind is purified by continuous vigilance, repentance, and अभ्यास. Slowly, harmful thoughts become weaker and the natural state of the soul shines more clearly.
