    story of adinath

    one year ago 831

Adinath, also known as Rishabhanatha, is revered as the first Tirthankara (spiritual teacher) of Jainism in the current time cycle (Avasarpini). His story holds a foundational place in Jain philosophy and tradition.

Birth and Early Life: Adinath was born to King Nabhiraja and Queen Marudevi in the city of Ayodhya. According to Jain texts, his birth was marked by auspicious signs, and he was destined for greatness. He belonged to the Ikshvaku dynasty.

Role as a King: As a ruler, Adinath is credited with introducing civilization to humanity. During his time, people lived a simple, primitive life. He taught them agriculture, arts, crafts, reading, writing, and the organization of society. He is thus called the "Father of Human Civilization" in Jain tradition.

Renunciation: After ruling as a king and fulfilling his worldly duties, Adinath developed a sense of detachment (vairagya) and decided to renounce worldly life. He distributed his kingdom among his sons, notably Bharata and Bahubali, and took the path of asceticism.

Spiritual Pursuit and Enlightenment: Adinath practiced rigorous penance and deep meditation for many years. It is said that, during his penance, people forgot how to prepare food, as he was the first ascetic who undertook fasting. Seeing this, his great-grandson Shreyansh Kumara offered him sugarcane juice, which became the first ahara (food) accepted by a Jain monk.

After years of spiritual practice, Adinath attained Kevala Jnana (omniscience) and became a Tirthankara, spreading the path of right faith, right knowledge, and right conduct.

Liberation: In the end, Adinath achieved moksha (liberation) at Mount Ashtapada, becoming free from the cycle of birth and death.

Significance: Adinath’s life emphasizes the Jain values of non-violence (ahimsa), truth, detachment, and self-discipline. He is often depicted in Jain art with a bull symbol and is worshipped as the first teacher who established the Jain Sangha (community).

His story inspires Jains to follow the path of righteousness and spiritual development.
