Should jains observe veganism?
In Jain Dharma, the core principle is ahimsa — non-violence in thought, speech, and action. Because of this, many Jains consider veganism to be more aligned with Jain values than ordinary vegetarianism, especially when dairy involves harm to animals.
Traditionally, most Jains follow lacto-vegetarianism, but from a strict ahimsa viewpoint, veganism can be seen as a deeper practice of non-violence if it is followed with care and proper nutrition.
So the Jain view can be stated simply:
- Vegetarianism is the traditional minimum practice
- Veganism is a stricter and often more ahimsa-oriented practice
- It should be adopted with awareness, balance, and compassion
In short: Yes, many Jains may choose veganism as a more compassionate and non-violent path, but it is not universally treated as an absolute compulsory rule in all Jain traditions.
