will taking less tablets and bearing cold reduce dravya hinsa?
In Jain Dharma, reducing harm is always better, so taking only the needed tablets can help reduce dravya hiṁsā if the medicine is not excessive or unnecessary.
But bearing cold is not automatically a virtue if it harms the body. Jain conduct values care for the body as an instrument for dharma, while avoiding attachment and indulgence. So the right approach is:
- Take medicine only when truly needed
- Use the least harmful and least necessary amount
- Do not deliberately damage the body by tolerating avoidable illness or severe cold
- Avoid carelessness that may lead to further harm
In Jain understanding, intent, necessity, and carefulness matter. So, yes, taking fewer tablets when medically appropriate may reduce harm, but enduring cold only for the sake of “less treatment” is not always correct if it causes greater bodily harm or weakens one’s ability to practice dharma.
The Jain ideal is balanced non-violence with विवेक: minimize harm, but do not force the body into avoidable suffering.
