Generally, Jains do not eat garlic in any form, including the leaf, because garlic is traditionally avoided as part of the prohibited root-vegetable category and also because of its strong pungent nature.

In common Jain practice, the safe rule is:

• Avoid garlic completely
• Also avoid onion and other root vegetables

Some local customs may differ slightly, but traditional Jain observance is to not use garlic at all.
