Do I need to repent for passing gas?
In Jain Dharma, passing gas by itself is a natural bodily function and is not something you need to “repent” for.
What matters is:
- Intention: if it happened naturally, there is no sinful intent.
- Ahimsa and decorum: if possible, try to avoid causing discomfort to others.
- Self-restraint: maintain cleanliness, modesty, and mindfulness.
If it was intentional to disturb, insult, or be careless in a way that harms others’ peace, then one should feel pratikraman-bhav: regret, self-awareness, and a resolve to be more careful.
So, in general: no repentance is needed for a natural bodily function. A gentle awareness and apology if it disturbed someone is enough.
