What are 8 types of karma
In Jainism, the 8 types of karma are:
- Jñānāvaraṇīya Karma – obscures true knowledge
- Darśanāvaraṇīya Karma – obscures right perception or intuition
- Vedanīya Karma – causes pleasure and pain
- Mohanīya Karma – causes delusion, attachment, and wrong belief
- Āyuṣya Karma – determines the lifespan of a living being
- Nāma Karma – determines the body, form, and physical features
- Gotra Karma – determines social status, family, and lineage
- Antarāya Karma – obstructs energy, charity, profit, enjoyment, and spiritual effort
These are divided into two broad groups:
- Ghātiyā karmas: destroy or cover the soul’s true qualities
- Aghātiyā karmas: affect the body and worldly life
In Jain Dharma, the goal is to stop the influx of karma and destroy existing karma through right faith, right knowledge, right conduct, austerity, and non-violence.
