If you have a pet that must eat meat can you feed it that?
From the Jain point of view, Ahimsa is the highest principle, so we should avoid causing violence as much as possible.
If you keep a pet, Jain teachings would generally encourage:
- choosing a vegetarian pet if possible,
- giving it food that does not involve unnecessary killing,
- and avoiding the act of directly feeding meat when there is a reasonable alternative.
If an animal’s health truly depends on a certain diet, Jain practice would usually emphasize:
- minimizing harm,
- not acting with violence willingly, and
- seeking the least harmful practical option.
So, in a strict Jain spirit, feeding meat is not preferred, but if there is a genuine necessity for the animal’s survival or health, the situation is judged with care based on intent, necessity, and reduction of violence.
In short: Jainism prefers non-violence, so meat should be avoided for pets if at all possible; only in unavoidable necessity would it be considered with great restraint.
