In Jain tradition, Rajulmati was not “non-veg” in the sense of the core story. The famous incident is about the animals that were being brought and killed for the marriage feast.

What happened?

• Neminath Bhagwan was going to marry Rajulmati.
• He came in the wedding procession on a rath/chariot.
• On the way, he saw or heard the suffering of animals that were to be slaughtered for the celebration.
• This awakened deep vairagya in him.
• He immediately gave up the marriage and turned toward renunciation.

Why did he take the rath for marriage?

Because he had already agreed to the wedding procession and reached the place as part of the marriage ceremony. But when he understood the violence connected with it, he renounced everything.

Important Jain meaning

This story teaches:

• Ahimsa is supreme.
• A true saint becomes detached when he sees violence.
• Even a worldly celebration should not be linked with harm to living beings.

About Rajulmati

In Jain tradition, Rajulmati later also became deeply spiritual and is respected for her devotion and detachment.

So, Neminath Bhagwan did not take the rath because Rajul was non-veg. He took the rath because it was the marriage procession, and then he left it upon seeing the हिंसा and slaughter connected with the wedding.
