lying to prevent harm, staying silent creating doubt and saying truth causing harm which is better
In Jain dharma, the best choice is not to lie, and not to speak hurtful truth either. The ideal is:
- Truthful
- Non-violent
- Necessary
- Gentle
- Without deception
So among the three, the Jain approach is:
- Do not lie — lying creates adharma and bondage.
- Do not speak truth that needlessly harms — truth should not become cruelty.
- Choose silence if it avoids harm and does not become deceit — but silence should not be used to trick others.
In simple terms: Satya should be joined with Ahimsa. A statement that is true but painful is not always right to speak. A lie is also not right. So the best is wise, restrained, harmless speech or pure silence when speech would cause injury.
A good Jain principle here is: speak only when it is true, beneficial, and harmless.
