The 18 paapstanak
The 18 Pāpsthānak are the 18 causes of sin in Jain Dharma. They are actions and thoughts that bind pāpa karma to the soul.
18 Pāpsthānak
- Prāṇātipāt – हिंसा / killing or hurting living beings
- Mṛṣāvād – lying
- Adattādān – stealing
- Maithun – sexual indulgence / unchaste conduct
- Parigrah – possessiveness / attachment to possessions
- Krodh – anger
- Mān – ego / pride
- Māyā – deceit / cunning
- Lobh – greed
- Rāg – attachment
- Dveṣ – hatred / aversion
- Kalaha – quarrel
- Abhyākhyān – false accusation
- Paisunya – backbiting / gossip
- Rati-arati – liking and disliking without balance
- Par-parivād – criticizing others
- Māyāmṛṣāvād – deceitful lying
- Mithyātva – wrong belief / false faith
