From the Jain standpoint, the soul (jīva) is real, eternal, and distinct from the body, mind, and karmic matter. Jainism does not accept that the self is only a conventional designation. It holds that bondage happens because consciousness is covered by karmic particles, and liberation comes when all karma is completely shed.

    A few key Jain points:

    • The soul is permanent in essence: it has consciousness as its true nature.
    • Bondage is real: karma is not just a mental or linguistic construct; it binds the soul and affects its condition.
    • Liberation requires full purification: not merely insight, but destruction of all karma.
    • Ethics, restraint, meditation, and austerity all matter because they stop new bondage and remove existing bondage.
    • Right knowledge alone is not enough unless it is joined with right conduct and purification.

So, from Jain Dharma, the statement that “there is no fixed self behind the process” would not be accepted. Jainism says there is a real soul behind experience, but it is covered by karma and appears limited in worldly life. Liberation is the soul’s complete purification, where it rises in its own pure nature of infinite knowledge, perception, bliss, and energy.

If you want, I can also give this as a point-by-point Jain response to the quoted Buddhist view.
