Please tell me the story of Harikeshiya muni
Harikeshiya Muni was a great Jain ascetic known for his intense tapas, forbearance, and non-attachment.
Brief story
Harikeshiya Muni once practiced severe penance with deep steadiness. Because of his spiritual strength and pure conduct, he became radiant in inner austerity. However, his body had become weak due to long tapas, and he appeared unattractive outwardly. One day, while he was absorbed in meditation, some people mocked him and behaved disrespectfully. Instead of becoming angry, Harikeshiya Muni remained completely calm and compassionate. He did not retaliate, nor did he lose his equanimity.
Because of this great kshama and samata (forgiveness and equanimity), his spiritual power shone even more. The story teaches that true greatness in Jain Dharma is not in the body, status, or appearance, but in:
- Ahimsa
- Kshama
- Titiksha (endurance)
- Samyak conduct
- Inner purification
Main teaching
Harikeshiya Muni’s story reminds us that a Jain muni conquers not others, but his own anger, pride, and attachment. Real victory is remaining शांत and pure even in insult, hardship, or disrespect.Jain message from this story
- Do not react with anger when insulted.
- Maintain equanimity in praise and blame.
- Tapasya should lead to humility.
- The soul becomes powerful through self-control, not through outer appearance.
