What is Pramad
Pramād in Jain Dharma means carelessness, negligence, or lack of जागरूकता (mindful awareness) in thought, speech, and action.
In Jain philosophy, pramād is considered very harmful because it weakens samyak ārādhana and becomes a cause of āsrava and bondage of karma. It is the opposite of apramād.
Simple meaning:
- not being alert
- acting without restraint
- forgetting dharma and self-discipline
- indulging in laziness, sleepiness, attachment, or mental distraction
In Jain practice:
A soul progresses when it stays in apramād — vigilance, restraint, and spiritual awareness. Pramād pulls the soul away from purity and liberation.Common forms of pramād include:
- excessive sleep
- laziness
- carelessness in vows
- attachment to sense pleasures
- talking or acting without awareness
- ignoring right conduct
In short, pramād is spiritual negligence, and apramād is spiritual alertness.
