panchindiya stotra and its meaning of every line

    one year ago 279

Certainly! The Panchindiya Stotra (also called Panchindiya Sutra or Panchindiya Parikhna) is a revered Jain prayer recited for self-restraint over the five senses. It is often chanted to reinforce the practice of samyama (self-control) and vigilance over the five sense organs: touch, taste, smell, sight, and hearing.

Below is the Panchindiya Stotra in Prakrit/Sanskrit with each line's meaning in English:

    ---

    पंचिन्दियाणं पमायरणिव्वत्तिणं

Panchindiyanam pamayara nivvattinam To those who have turned away from carelessness pertaining to the five senses

    पंचव्वयाणं विरमणसंकप्पाणं

Panchavvayanam viraman sankappanam To those whose intentions are to abstain from the five types of sins (associated with the senses)

    पंचसयलसंगविरयणपरायणं

Panchasayala-sang virayana parayanam To those who are devoted to renouncing all types of attachment

    तेसिं पंचइन्दियाणं

Tesiṃ pancha-indiyanam To such (noble souls) who have subdued the five senses

    वन्दामि समाहिदं

Vandāmi samāhidam I bow with devotion.

    ---

    Detailed Meaning (Line by Line):

    1. पंचिन्दियाणं पमायरणिव्वत्तिणं

To those who have completely turned away from negligence (carelessness) associated with the five senses (touch, taste, smell, sight, hearing).

    1. पंचव्वयाणं विरमणसंकप्पाणं

To those whose resolve is to refrain from the five kinds of sinful activities related to the senses.

    1. पंचसयलसंगविरयणपरायणं

To those who are devoted to abandoning all forms of attachment and passions (through the five senses).

    1. तेसिं पंचइन्दियाणं

To such (great) beings who have conquered the five senses...

    1. वन्दामि समाहिदं

...I bow with deep concentration and reverence.

    ---

    Summary

This stotra is a salutation to ascetics and souls who have exercised perfect self-control over the five senses, abstained from sensory vices, and attained a state of inner discipline and purity. Reciting this stotra inspires devotees to practice vigilance, self-restraint, and detachment as taught in Jainism.
