Why do we sleep down in periods ? And not use the regular bed
In Jain tradition, many women avoid using a regular bed during menstruation and sleep on the floor or on a simple bedding because of discipline, purity, and reduced attachment to comfort.
Main reasons include:
- Austerity and simplicity
Jain dharma encourages less comfort and less indulgence, especially during special bodily conditions.
- Respect for bodily processes
Menstruation is treated as a natural bodily state, and many families keep a simple, separate routine during this time.
- Tradition and observance
In some Jain communities, sleeping on the floor during periods is a customary rule followed for generations.
- Self-restraint
The practice supports awareness, modesty, and detachment from luxury.
This is mainly a customary practice, and it can differ between Digambar and Shwetambar traditions, and even from one family to another. Jain texts and practices emphasize ahimsa, discipline, and purity of conduct, but the exact household observances are often tradition-based.
In short: it is done as a sign of simplicity, restraint, and traditional observance, not because the bed itself is considered sinful.
