Can you pray for someone to have a good outcome from a medical procedure. If so what sort of prayer do you say?
Yes. In Jain Dharma, you can offer a prayer for someone’s well-being and for the smooth success of a medical procedure.
Jain prayer is usually not a request to a creator, but a sincere expression of bhav:
- goodwill for the person,
- peace of mind,
- strength,
- and support for wholesome causes and good karma.
A simple Jain prayer you may say is:
“Arihanta, Siddha, Acharya, Upadhyaya, Sarva Sadhu Bhagwantone namaskar. Aa vyakti ne sukh, shanti, bal ane swasthya male. Aapda bhava shuddha rahe ane sarva mangal thao.”
Meaning:
- I bow to the Arihants, Siddhas, Acharyas, Upadhyayas, and all Sadhus.
- May this person receive peace, strength, and good health.
- May my intention remain pure, and may auspiciousness prevail.
A very common and powerful Jain recitation is the Namokar Mantra:
Namo Arihantanam Namo Siddhanam Namo Ayariyanam Namo Uvajjhayanam Namo Loe Savva Sahunam
You may recite it with the feeling:
“May this person be protected, may the procedure go well, and may there be peace and wellbeing.”
If you want, I can also give you:
- a short prayer in Gujarati,
- a formal Jain stotra-style prayer, or
- a very simple one-line prayer for daily use.
