What are types of gyan in Jainism
In Jainism, the five types of gyan (knowledge) are:
- Mati Gyan – knowledge gained through the senses and mind
- Includes recognition, memory, reasoning, and understanding.
- Shrut Gyan – knowledge through scriptures, words, and teachings
- Based on hearing, reading, and studying true doctrine.
- Avadhi Gyan – direct clairvoyant knowledge of material objects at a distance
- A partial supernatural knowledge.
- Manahparyaya Gyan – knowledge of the thoughts of others
- The ability to know the mental states of living beings.
- Keval Gyan – absolute, infinite knowledge
- Perfect knowledge free from all ignorance, found in the enlightened soul.
Simple classification
- Mati and Shrut are usually called indirect knowledge.
- Avadhi, Manahparyaya, and Keval are direct knowledge.
Among these, Keval Gyan is the highest and most complete form of knowledge in Jainism.
