Please give the exact text and meaning of the forgiveness prayers

    3 months ago 49

Here are the most well-known Jain forgiveness prayers, with their text and meaning.

    1) Khamemi Savva Jive / Micchāmi Dukkaḍaṁ

This is the common forgiveness prayer used after Samvatsari Pratikraman and also in daily Jain practice.

    Text

Khamemi savva jive, savve jiva khamantu me Mitti me savva-bhuesu, veram majjham na kenai

    Meaning

    • I forgive all living beings.
    • May all living beings forgive me.
    • May I have friendship with all beings.
    • May there be no enmity with anyone.

    Short meaning in simple words

“I ask forgiveness from all beings for any hurt caused by me, knowingly or unknowingly. I forgive others too, and I wish peace and friendship with all.”

    ---

    2) Micchāmi Dukkaḍaṁ

This is the short forgiveness expression used in Jain tradition.

    Text

    Micchāmi Dukkaḍaṁ

    Meaning

“May my wrong actions be forgiven.” Or more simply: “I seek forgiveness for my faults.”

It is often said after pratikraman, during Paryushan, and when seeking forgiveness from elders, monks, nuns, and fellow Jains.

    ---

    3) Khāmemi Savve Jīvā

A very similar prayer also recited in some traditions.

    Text

Khāmemi savve jīvā, savve jīvā khamantu me Mitti me savva-bhūesu, veraṁ majjhaṁ na keṇaī

    Meaning

    • I forgive all living beings.
    • May all living beings forgive me.
    • May I be friendly with all beings.
    • May I have no hostility toward anyone.

    ---

    Spiritual essence

In Jain Dharma, forgiveness is not just saying words. It means:
    • removing anger,
    • admitting one’s own faults,
    • forgiving others sincerely,
    • and cultivating maitrī (friendship), pramoda (respect), kāruṇya (compassion), and mādhyasthya (equanimity).

    In short

The core message of Jain forgiveness prayers is:

“I forgive all, I ask forgiveness from all, and I keep no enmity with anyone.”

If you want, I can also give:

    • the full Samvatsari forgiveness prayer,
    • the Sanskrit/Prakrit word-by-word meaning, or
    • the Gujarati/Hindi meaning.
