I keep getting thoughts about what is my actual purpose of life and get very emotional that i am stuck in materialistic world why does this happen and what should I do
In Jain Dharma, this happens because the soul naturally longs for its true state — purity, peace, and freedom — but it is currently connected with karma and worldly attachments. When a person begins to feel, “This material life is not enough,” it is often a sign of inner awakening. Your emotions are not wrong; they show that your soul is becoming aware of its deeper purpose.
Why this happens
According to Jain teachings:- The jiva is pure by nature.
- Due to karma, it becomes bound in the cycle of worldly life.
- The world of possessions, status, and pleasures is temporary.
- When the mind starts sensing this truth, one may feel sadness, emptiness, or restlessness.
- This is often a beginning of vairagya — detachment from worldly illusion.
So this feeling can be understood as a call from the soul to move toward right understanding.
What your real purpose is
In Jain Dharma, the purpose of life is:- to know the soul
- to reduce karmic bondage
- to practice ahimsa, truth, non-attachment, and self-restraint
- to move toward moksha
You are not “stuck” forever. The soul has the ability to rise above the worldly state.
What you should do
- Accept the feeling without fear
Do not think something is wrong with you. This feeling can become a spiritual strength.
- Spend time in prayer, swadhyay, and reflection
Read or listen to Jain scriptures, stotras, and teachings that remind you of the soul’s nature.
- Practice mindfulness of karma
Ask yourself: - Is this thought increasing attachment? - Is this action bringing peace or restlessness? - Is this helping my soul progress?
- Reduce unnecessary desires
Try simple living, fewer possessions, less comparison, and less attachment to praise or success.
- Do sadhana regularly
- Pratikraman - Samayik - meditation on the soul - repentance for harmful thoughts and actions
- Serve with ahimsa
Helping others with compassion can soften the mind and purify the heart.
A simple Jain way to think
Instead of asking, “Why am I stuck?” ask:“How can I use this human life to move toward liberation?”
That shift itself is spiritual progress.
When the emotions feel heavy
Sit quietly and repeat mentally:“I am a soul, not this temporary body or worldly identity.”
This can help bring detachment and peace.
If you feel emotional often, do not suppress it. Channel it into bhakti, self-study, and inner discipline. In Jain Dharma, even sorrow can become a doorway to awakening when seen with right faith and right understanding.
You are not lost. You are being called inward.
