What are soul conditions?
In Jain Dharma, “soul conditions” usually means the different spiritual states of the soul according to its purity, attachment, and karmic bondage.
The most important classification is the 14 Gunasthānas — the 14 stages of spiritual development of the soul.
Simple meaning
A soul may be:- deeply bound by karma
- partly pure and progressing
- almost free
- or fully liberated
The 14 soul conditions are:
- Mithyātva — wrong belief
- Sāsādana — falling from right faith
- Miśra — mixed faith
- Avirata Samyagdrishti — right belief but without vows
- Deśavirata — partial vows
- Pramatta Virata — full vows with carelessness
- Apramatta Virata — full vows with vigilance
- Apūrvakaraṇa — new purity process
- Anivṛtti Bādarasāmparāya — advanced purity
- Sūkṣma Sāmparāya — very subtle attachment
- Upaśānta Moha — deluded passions suppressed
- Kṣīṇa Moha — delusion destroyed
- Sayogi Kevalī — omniscient but active in body, speech, mind
- Ayogi Kevalī — final stage before liberation
In short
These soul conditions show the journey of the soul from ignorance to liberation. If you want, I can also explain the 14 gunasthānas in very easy language one by one.
