Why should 9 year olds be discouraged from taking diksha

    3 months ago 62

In Jain Dharma, diksha is a very serious and lifelong spiritual commitment. A 9-year-old is usually still too young to fully understand and sustain it.

Reasons children that young are often discouraged:

    1. Lack of maturity

Diksha requires deep understanding of vows, discipline, renunciation, and lifelong restraint. A child of 9 may not yet have the mental maturity for such a decision.

    1. Ability to observe vows

The vows of a sadhu/sadhvi life are very strict. They need steady self-control, patience, and awareness, which usually develop more fully later.

    1. Physical strength and endurance

The ascetic way of life can involve fasting, walking, and hardship. A young child may not have the physical strength to carry this properly.

    1. Risk of incomplete understanding

If diksha is taken too early, there is a greater chance that the child is influenced by emotion, family atmosphere, or admiration, rather than true inner detachment.

    1. Protection of the child’s future choice

Jain tradition values genuine vairagya. A child should grow enough to recognize whether renunciation is truly their own inner path.

So, from a Jain perspective, diksha should be taken only when there is real vairagya, proper understanding, and the ability to follow the vows sincerely. For a 9-year-old, that is usually considered premature.

In short: a child should first be allowed to grow in understanding, discipline, and inner maturity before taking such a sacred step.
