Why no eggplant eat by jains

    3 months ago 120

In Jain Dharma, many Jains avoid eggplant (brinjal / baingan) because of the principle of ahimsa — avoiding harm to living beings as much as possible.

    Main reasons commonly given are:

    1. It contains many seeds

In Jain understanding, foods with many seeds are often avoided because they are considered to involve more life-forms and greater violence in eating.

    1. More jiva-badha is possible

Jainism teaches carefulness in food so that fewer living beings are harmed. Eggplant is often seen as a food with more subtle life and therefore less suitable for strict Jain diet.

    1. Tradition of restraint

In many Jain communities, especially among the more strict followers, brinjal is traditionally avoided along with root vegetables, because food choices should support non-violence and self-discipline.

    1. Sense of purity and austerity

Jain food rules are not only about health, but about spiritual discipline, reducing attachment, and minimizing injury to life.

So, the basic reason is: Jains avoid eggplant to reduce हिंसा (violence) toward living beings and to follow ahimsa more carefully.

In some Jain traditions, food restrictions can vary in strictness, but the spirit remains the same: eat in a way that causes the least harm.
