Why don't drink alcohol
In Jain Dharma, we do not drink alcohol because it is considered harmful to ahimsa, self-control, and right awareness.
Main reasons:
- It harms living beings
Alcohol production and fermentation involve subtle living organisms. Jain ethics avoid causing harm to even the smallest forms of life.
- It weakens mindfulness
Alcohol clouds the mind and reduces vivek (discernment), making it harder to follow vows, restraint, and right conduct.
- It increases passions
Intoxication can lead to anger, greed, pride, and attachment, which obstruct spiritual progress.
- It leads to negligence
Jain practice emphasizes apramad — carefulness and awareness. Alcohol can cause carelessness in speech, action, and thought.
- It is against self-discipline
Jain life encourages purity, restraint, and clarity. Alcohol is seen as contrary to these ideals.
So, in Jainism, avoiding alcohol supports ahimsa, samyaktva, and spiritual purity.
