What are we doing when we recite Vandittu Sutra during Pratikraman
When we recite the Vandittu Sutra during Pratikraman, we are bowing in humility, confessing our faults, and asking for forgiveness before the Arihants, Siddhas, Acharyas, Upadhyayas, Sadhus, and all worthy beings.
In simple words, we are doing these things:
- Vandana — offering reverent salutation to the spiritual path and the holy beings.
- Pratikraman bhav — turning inward and reviewing our actions, words, and thoughts.
- Alochana — sincerely admitting our mistakes.
- Prayaschitta-bhav — expressing repentance and purification.
- Kshamapana — seeking forgiveness for any harm done knowingly or unknowingly.
- Resolution for self-restraint — strengthening our intention to avoid such faults again.
Spiritually, Vandittu Sutra helps us cultivate:
- Vinay: humility
- Ahimsa: non-violence
- Nirjara: shedding karmas
- Atma-shuddhi: inner purification
So, during Pratikraman, reciting Vandittu Sutra is not just saying words — it is a heartfelt act of repentance, respect, and self-correction in the Jain path.
