Upwaas benefit jainism
In Jainism, Upwaas (fasting) is a sacred tapas and has many spiritual benefits:
- Reduces karma: By controlling food and desires, one weakens bondage of karma.
- Increases self-control: It helps develop indriya-jay and discipline over the senses.
- Purifies mind and body: Fasting supports inner simplicity, calmness, and purity.
- Strengthens dharma-bhavana: It deepens devotion, awareness, and remembrance of the soul.
- Improves forgiveness and detachment: A fasting person becomes more humble, patient, and less attached to comforts.
- Supports meditation and introspection: With less bodily activity, the mind can turn inward.
- Cultivates non-violence: Upwaas is an expression of ahimsa, because it reduces greed and indulgence.
In Jain tradition, the main purpose of Upwaas is not only physical restraint, but spiritual upliftment — to move the soul toward purity, penance, and liberation.
