What should a Jain do if a stray cat is killing pigeons in front of them?
A Jain should respond with ahimsa, compassion, and restraint.
- Do not harm the cat to stop it.
- Try a non-violent way to protect the pigeons, such as gently shooing the cat away, making noise, placing yourself between them if safe, or creating a barrier.
- Do not panic or act with anger. Keep the mind calm and compassionate.
- If possible, help prevent future harm by discouraging the cat from that spot in a harmless way.
- If a pigeon is injured, help it only if you can do so without causing more harm.
In Jain Dharma, the intention should always be to minimize violence as much as possible. If complete protection is not possible, one should still avoid adding more harm and act with awareness, compassion, and non-violence.
