What if someone else is hurting us physically... should we fight back?
In Jain Dharma, ahimsa is supreme. So the ideal response is not to retaliate with anger or violence.
If someone is hurting you physically, the Jain approach is:
- First try to escape, avoid, or stop the harm without harming them.
- Use the minimum necessary force only to protect life and prevent immediate injury, especially for a householder.
- Do not act out of hatred, revenge, or ego.
- If possible, seek help, withdraw, or restrain without cruelty.
For a sādhu/sādhvī, the vow of nonviolence is extremely strict, so they do not fight back. For a lay Jain (श्रावक/श्राविका), protecting oneself is generally accepted only as a last resort and with the least possible violence.
The inner spirit should remain:
- compassion
- self-control
- forgiveness
- no revenge
So, in short: do not “fight back” in anger, but if immediate danger exists, protect yourself with the least harm possible.
