what is akarta bhav in jainism
Akartā bhāv in Jainism means the inner feeling of “I am not the doer”.
In Jain philosophy, the soul is conscious and pure by nature, but worldly actions happen because of karma, body, mind, speech, and external conditions. When one develops akartā bhāv, one understands:
- “I am the pure soul.”
- “The body and mind act, but the soul should not identify with doership.”
- “I should remain detached and witness the action without ego.”
Meaning in simple words
Akartā bhāv is the attitude of:- non-ownership of action
- non-identification with worldly activity
- detachment from ego of “I did this”
Why it is important
In Jainism, bondage of karma increases when there is:- ego
- attachment
- doership feeling
- desire for result
Akartā bhāv helps reduce these and supports:
- vitarāgabhāv
- samyak darshan
- inner purity
- moksha-mārga
Important note
Akartā bhāv does not mean doing nothing or becoming careless. It means doing one’s duty with awareness, but without ego and possessiveness. In Jain spiritual practice, this helps one remain centered in the true nature of the soul.
