Lord Rishabh Dev, also known as Adinath, is revered as the first Tirthankara (spiritual teacher) of the present time cycle (Avasarpini) in Jainism. His life and teachings are foundational to Jain philosophy and tradition.

Birth and Early Life:

• Rishabh Dev was born to King Nabhi and Queen Marudevi in the ancient city of Ayodhya.
• His birth is considered auspicious; it is believed that several divine signs appeared at the time of his birth.
• He belonged to the Ikshvaku dynasty, and his birth marked the beginning of the current era for Jains.

Worldly Life:

• He had two wives, Sumangala and Sunanda, and several children, including his sons Bharata (after whom India is named Bharat) and Bahubali, and daughters such as Brahmi and Sundari.

Renunciation and Spiritual Journey:

• Witnessing the impermanence of worldly pleasures and realizing the true nature of the soul, he decided to renounce his royal life.
• He performed a grand ceremony, distributing all his possessions, and set out as a Digambara monk, practicing severe penance and deep meditation.
• For a long period, he wandered as an ascetic, observing strict vows and practicing complete non-violence (ahimsa).

Attainment of Kevala Jnana (Omniscience):

• After years of intense spiritual practice and austerities, Rishabh Dev attained Kevala Jnana, the state of infinite knowledge, perception, bliss, and power.
• Following this, he became a Tirthankara, establishing the Jain Sangha (fourfold community of monks, nuns, laymen, and laywomen) and spreading the path of righteousness.

Nirvana (Liberation):

• Rishabh Dev spent many years preaching the path of non-violence, truth, and asceticism.
• He attained moksha (liberation) on Mount Ashtapada (believed to be Mount Kailash by tradition), freeing himself from the cycle of birth and death.

• Lord Rishabh Dev is considered the founder of Jain society, culture, and spiritual discipline.
