How can deep vairagya bhav be achieved while completing one’s responsibilities
Deep vairagya bhav can be developed while fulfilling responsibilities by practicing detachment in the mind, not neglect in conduct. In Jain Dharma, this means remaining engaged in duty with purity, humility, and non-attachment.
How to develop it:
- See all duties as karma-yogya
- Understand that family, work, and social duties are temporary responsibilities. - Perform them sincerely, but without ego or possessiveness.
- Reduce inner attachment
- Do not think: “This is mine,” “I am the doer,” or “This must happen only my way.” - Keep the भावना: “I am only a caretaker; everything is transient.”
- Practice samyak drashti
- Remember the soul is separate from body, wealth, status, and relations. - This understanding naturally weakens attachment.
- Stay balanced in success and failure
- Jain vairagya grows when praise and blame, gain and loss, joy and sorrow are seen with equanimity.
- Limit unnecessary desires
- Responsibilities should be completed, but greed, luxury, and craving should be reduced. - Aparigraha supports vairagya very strongly.
- Daily self-reflection
- At the end of the day, ask: - Did I act with attachment? - Did I keep anger, pride, deceit, and greed under control? - Did I serve duty while remembering the soul?
- Use discipline in speech, thought, and action
- Vairagya is not only external renunciation. - True vairagya is inner purity while living responsibly.
- Associate with satsang and study
- Listening to Jain teachings, reading scripture, and staying near spiritually inclined people strengthens detachment.
Important Jain understanding
A person need not leave responsibilities to become detached. True vairagya is to live in the world with awareness, but not be bound by it.Simple inner भावना
You may repeatedly cultivate this thought:“I will do my duty fully, but I belong to the soul, not to possessions or temporary roles.”
This is the Jain way to combine responsibility with vairagya.
