if our body is burnt after death all these micro organisms on our body are brutally killed for no fault...isn't burial better?
Answer
In Jain Dharma, your concern is very compassionate. But burial is not necessarily “better” than cremation from an ahimsa point of view. Both methods involve some level of harm to living beings.Explanation
- After death, the soul has already left the body.
- The body itself is no longer a conscious living self, but it still contains many life forms and becomes a site of decomposition.
- Cremation quickly ends that process.
- Burial allows slow decay in the earth, which can also harm countless microorganisms and earth-bodied life over time.
So in Jain understanding, burial is not automatically more nonviolent.
Spiritual Understanding
Jain Dharma focuses more on:- non-attachment to the body
- minimizing harm
- maintaining inner purity and equanimity
The key teaching is not to become emotionally attached to the dead body, because the true self is the soul, not the body. Funeral practices are meant to be done with respect, simplicity, and as little violence as practical.
