What is brahmacharya
In Jainism, brahmacharya refers to the practice of celibacy or self-restraint regarding sexual activity. It is one of the five major vows (mahavratas) undertaken by Jain monks and nuns, and one of the five minor vows (anuvratas) practiced by Jain laypeople.
For monks and nuns, brahmacharya means complete renunciation of all sexual thoughts, desires, and actions, both physically and mentally. For laypersons, it means remaining faithful to one's spouse and restraining from excessive sensual pleasures.
Brahmacharya is practiced to control passions (kashayas), reduce attachment, and progress on the path of spiritual purification and liberation (moksha). It helps in conserving spiritual energy and focusing the mind on self-realization.
