    Any story of brahmacharya

    one year ago 220

Certainly! In Jainism, brahmacharya is the vow of celibacy or chastity, one of the five great vows (mahavratas) for monks and nuns, and one of the five minor vows (anuvratas) for laypeople. It is considered essential for spiritual progress, as it helps in controlling desires and channeling energy toward self-realization.

Story of Brahmacharya: The Monk and the Mango Tree

Once, there was a Jain monk named Sudharma Suri who had taken the vow of brahmacharya very strictly. One day, while he was meditating under a mango tree, a young woman passed by and tried to engage him in conversation. She admired his discipline and wanted to test his commitment. She offered him ripe mangoes, speaking sweetly and trying to distract him.

Sudharma Suri, remembering his vows and the teachings of Lord Mahavira, closed his eyes, recited the Namokar Mantra, and practiced deep concentration. He neither accepted the fruits nor responded to the woman's advances. Instead, he calmly advised her about the importance of self-control and the spiritual joy that comes from brahmacharya. Realizing her mistake, the woman was inspired by the monk’s discipline and left, resolving to live a more virtuous life herself.

This story illustrates how Jain monks and nuns remain steadfast in their vow of brahmacharya, seeing it as a means to purify the soul, overcome attachments, and progress toward liberation (moksha).

Moral: Brahmacharya, as practiced in Jainism, is not just physical celibacy but also involves controlling thoughts, speech, and actions, thereby achieving purity and spiritual strength.
