    How to attain self realisation

    one year ago 118

In Jainism, self-realisation (Atma-jnana) is the direct perception and experience of one's true nature as the pure soul (Atman), distinct from the body and material existence. Attaining self-realisation is the ultimate spiritual goal and leads towards liberation (moksha). Jain teachings prescribe the following path:

    1. Right Faith (Samyak Darshan):

Developing unwavering faith in the true nature of reality, the teachings of the Tirthankaras, and the path to liberation.

    1. Right Knowledge (Samyak Jnana):

Studying and understanding the Jain scriptures (Agamas) to gain correct knowledge about the soul, karma, and spiritual practices.

    1. Right Conduct (Samyak Charitra):

Practicing ethical discipline based on the five great vows (Mahavratas) for ascetics or the smaller vows (Anuvratas) for householders: - Ahimsa (non-violence) - Satya (truthfulness) - Asteya (non-stealing) - Brahmacharya (celibacy/chastity) - Aparigraha (non-possessiveness)

    1. Meditation and Self-restraint:

Regular meditation (dhyana), reflection (svadhyaya), and control over passions (kashayas) help purify the soul, weaken karmic bonds, and foster awareness of the self.

    1. Detachment (Vairagya):

Developing detachment from worldly pleasures and recognizing the transient nature of material things.

    1. Association with the Virtuous:

Keeping the company of spiritually advanced souls (satsang) and seeking guidance from true teachers (Sadguru).

According to Jainism, by sincerely following the path of Right Faith, Right Knowledge, and Right Conduct (the Three Jewels or Ratnatraya), one gradually sheds karmic matter, experiences the true self, and moves toward ultimate liberation.

    Key Jain Scriptures:

    • Tattvartha Sutra (by Acharya Umaswati)
    • Samayasara (by Acharya Kundakunda)
    • Uttaradhyayana Sutra

Summary: Self-realisation in Jainism is achieved by purifying the soul through the Three Jewels, practicing ethical discipline, meditation, and detachment, ultimately experiencing one’s true nature as a pure, liberated soul.
