    What are 14 gunasthanas

    2 months ago 22

    Answer

The 14 gunasthanas are the 14 spiritual stages of soul-development in Jain Dharma. They describe how the soul progresses from wrong faith and bondage toward complete purity and liberation.

    Explanation

Each gunasthana shows a deeper level of control over karma, passions, and attachment.
    1. Mithyatva – wrong belief
    2. Sasvadana Samyagdrishti – fleeting right belief
    3. Mishra – mixed state of right and wrong belief
    4. Avirata Samyagdrishti – right belief, but without vows
    5. Desavirata – partial vows begin
    6. Pramatta-samyata – full vows, but with carelessness
    7. Apramatta-samyata – full vigilance
    8. Apurva-karana – new, unprecedented spiritual effort
    9. Anivrtti-badara-samparaya – very subtle passions remain
    10. Sukshma-samparaya – only extremely subtle greed remains
    11. Upashanta-moha – deluded passions are suppressed
    12. Kshina-moha – deluded passions are destroyed
    13. Sayogi-kevali – omniscient soul with activity still present
    14. Ayogi-kevali – final stage before liberation, with no activity

    Spiritual Understanding

The 14 gunasthanas show that liberation in Jainism is not sudden; it is a step-by-step purification of consciousness. As the soul rises through these stages:
    • false beliefs decrease
    • attachment and anger weaken
    • vows and self-restraint increase
    • karma becomes thinner and thinner
    • the soul moves closer to moksha

This teaching is very important because it gives a clear map of spiritual progress.

    Takeaway

The 14 gunasthanas are the ladder of spiritual evolution in Jainism. They explain how the soul gradually moves from ignorance to perfect purity and, finally, liberation.
