Why good people are suffering and bad are making merry

    one year ago 86

In Jainism, the question of why good people suffer and bad people seem to prosper is addressed through the doctrine of karma. According to Jain philosophy:

    • Every soul accumulates karma (both good and bad) through its actions, thoughts, and intentions over countless lifetimes.
    • The fruits of karma do not necessarily manifest immediately. Good deeds may bear fruit in a future life, and so may bad deeds.
    • A good person suffering in this life may be experiencing the results of negative karma from past lives, while a person behaving badly but enjoying happiness now may be benefiting from good karma accumulated previously.
    • Jainism teaches that one should not be disheartened by apparent injustice, as the law of karma is infallible and impartial. Every soul receives the exact consequences of its past actions, even if these are not immediately visible.

The key Jain teaching is to continue practicing right conduct (samyak charitra), right knowledge (samyak jnana), and right faith (samyak darshan), regardless of current circumstances, because the ultimate goal is liberation (moksha) from the cycle of birth and death, which is only possible by purifying one's soul and shedding all karmas.

In summary, apparent injustice is only temporary. Ultimately, everyone faces the results of their own actions, and Jainism encourages us to remain steadfast in our spiritual practice, knowing that true happiness lies in liberation, not in temporary worldly pleasures or pains.
