How to find out the gati a soul has gained after death
Answer
In Jain Dharma, an ordinary person cannot know with certainty which gati a soul has attained after death. Only a Kevalī Jñānī or omniscient being can know the exact destination of a soul.Explanation
A soul’s next gati is decided by its karma, especially the state of the soul at the time of death. The four gatis are:
- Manushya gati — human birth
- Deva gati — heavenly birth
- Naraka gati — hellish birth
- Tiryanch gati — animal/other non-human birth
In Jain tradition, people may make an inference based on:
- the person’s karma
- their conduct in life
- their mental state at death
- the nature of their attachments, anger, greed, and delusion
But this is still only an inference, not certain knowledge.
Spiritual Understanding
Jain Dharma teaches that it is more important to focus on how to purify the soul now than to speculate about where another soul has gone. What truly matters is:
- reducing attachment
- reducing passions
- doing forgiveness
- living with non-violence
- practicing right faith, right knowledge, and right conduct
By purifying our own karma, we improve our own future gati.
