What do we do during the Das lakshan parv

    one year ago 209

During the Das Lakshan Parv (also known as Paryushan Parva in the Svetambara tradition), Jains observe a period of deep spiritual reflection, self-purification, and religious practices centered on the cultivation of the ten cardinal virtues (Das Lakshan):

    1. Uttam Kshama (Supreme Forgiveness)
    2. Uttam Mardava (Supreme Humility)
    3. Uttam Arjava (Supreme Straightforwardness)
    4. Uttam Shaucha (Supreme Contentment/Purity)
    5. Uttam Satya (Supreme Truthfulness)
    6. Uttam Sanyam (Supreme Self-restraint)
    7. Uttam Tap (Supreme Austerity)
    8. Uttam Tyaga (Supreme Renunciation)
    9. Uttam Akinchanya (Supreme Non-possessiveness)
    10. Uttam Brahmacharya (Supreme Celibacy/Chastity)

Key activities during Das Lakshan Parv:

    • Daily Reflection: Each day is devoted to reflecting on and practicing one of the ten virtues.
    • Prayers and Pujas: Jains participate in collective prayers, recitation of scriptures, and rituals at temples or at home.
    • Fasting and Austerities: Many observe fasting (upvas), eat simple food, or follow dietary restrictions to purify the body and mind.
    • Forgiveness: The festival culminates in asking for forgiveness (Kshamapana) from all living beings, emphasizing non-violence and compassion.
    • Scripture Study: Reading and listening to discourses from Jain Agamas and Tattvarthasutra, especially relating to the ten virtues.
    • Introspection and Repentance: Practicing Pratikraman (introspection and repentance of past wrongdoings).
    • Giving and Charity: Acts of charity (daan) are performed, such as helping the poor or supporting monks and nuns.
    • Community Gatherings: Attending sermons, lectures, and group discussions on Jain philosophy.
    • Non-violence: Extra care is taken to avoid harm to any living being, reinforcing the principle of ahimsa.

The ultimate aim of Das Lakshan Parv is spiritual upliftment and purification, seeking to overcome passions (kashayas) and progress on the path of liberation (moksha).
