MEANING OF EACH VERSE OF NAMUTHANNUM SHLOKH

    one year ago 164

Certainly! The "Namuththunam" (also written as "Namothunam" or "Namokar Mantra") is a fundamental prayer in Jainism. It is also known as the "Navkar Mantra" or "Namokar Mantra." This mantra is a salutation to the five supreme beings in Jainism and is considered the most important mantra in the Jain tradition.

Here is the mantra (Namuththunam shlokh) with the meaning of each verse:

    Namokar Mantra in Sanskrit: ``` णमो अरिहंताणं । णमो सिद्धाणं । णमो आयरियाणं । णमो उवज्झायाणं । णमो लोए सव्वसाहूणं ॥ ```

    Transliteration:

    1. Namo Arihantānam
    2. Namo Siddhānam
    3. Namo Ayariyānam
    4. Namo Uvajjhāyānam
    5. Namo Loe Savva Sāhūnam

    Meaning of Each Verse:

    1. Namo Arihantānam

"I bow to the Arihants (conquerors of inner passions who have attained omniscience)." Arihants are the souls who have conquered their inner enemies such as anger, pride, deceit, and greed and have attained perfect knowledge (Kevala Jñāna).

    1. Namo Siddhānam

"I bow to the Siddhas (liberated souls)." Siddhas are pure, liberated souls who are free from the cycle of birth and death, having destroyed all their karmas.

    1. Namo Ayariyānam

"I bow to the Acharyas (spiritual leaders or heads of the Jain order)." Acharyas are the spiritual heads of the Jain community who teach and uphold the Jain scriptures.

    1. Namo Uvajjhāyānam

"I bow to the Upadhyays (spiritual teachers or preceptors)." Upadhyays are teachers who explain the scriptures and guide monks and laypeople in the path of righteousness.

    1. Namo Loe Savva Sāhūnam

"I bow to all the Sādhus (monks and nuns) in the world." Sādhus and sādhvis are those who have renounced worldly attachments and are following the path of spiritual purification and discipline.

Summary Meaning: By bowing to these five supreme beings, one receives the benefit of their virtues and advances on the path to liberation. The mantra does not reference any particular person or deity but pays homage to the qualities and virtues of these ideal beings.

Essence: The Navkar Mantra emphasizes respect for spiritual purity and guidance, and is a universal prayer for the Jain community.
