What is the Definition of Dharma?

In Jainism, the term "Dharma" primarily means righteousness, moral virtue, and the path of right conduct. It refers to the ethical and spiritual duties and principles that lead a soul towards liberation (moksha). Dharma in Jainism encompasses non-violence (ahimsa), truthfulness (satya), non-stealing (asteya), celibacy (brahmacharya), and non-possessiveness (aparigraha). Following Dharma means living in a way that avoids harm to all living beings, supports spiritual progress, and upholds the teachings of the Tirthankaras. Additionally, in Jain metaphysics, "Dharma" is also one of the six universal substances (dravyas) and represents the medium that allows motion.
